HOW DOES THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE WORK?
In each Alexander Technique lesson you will learn how to become more aware of your body/mind connection so you can make more intelligent choices and improve how your body feels and functions.
WHAT IF IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME?
Not all forms of pain are relieved by the Alexander Technique, especially those based on physiological illness. In your trial lesson, we will work together to see if this is a good fit for you.
DO I HAVE TO BRING ANY EQUIPMENT WITH ME?
You don't need any special equipment or clothing other than that which relates to what we would explore together. Wear something you'd feel comfortable moving around in.
HOW MANY LESSONS SHOULD I TAKE?
It's a lot like psychotherapy - how many sessions you take depends on your level of need and interest. Some people need only one or two to get what they need. Others, like I did, need many more to overcome pain. And yet other, like myself, continue taking lessons because it's so fun and fascinating.
WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?
According to this study published in the British Medical Journal in 2008, six lessons in the Alexander Technique reduced back pain reduced by over 50% and twenty-four lessons reduced back pain by over 86%.
HOW LONG WILL THOSE RESULTS LAST?
You can expect the results to last as long as you want, perhaps even indefinitely. According to that same BMJ study the pain-reduction was sustained through the final survey, a year after the lessons had ended.
IS THERE A HANDS-ON COMPONENT?
Yes. One of the great teaching tools of the Alexander Technique is how the teacher can directly guide your body to a more effortless place through the use of his or her hands on your head, neck, back, arms, or feet.
IS IT SAFE?
Yes! The Alexander Technique is extremely safe and gentle, especially when compared to invasive pain-relief methods like surgery, some forms of intense body work, or medications.
